Welcome Dr. Frank Ma to Pacific Northwest Retina

Pacific Northwest Retina is proud to welcome Dr. Frank Ma, a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained retina specialist, to our team. Dr. Ma brings exceptional training, research expertise, and a deep commitment to patient-centered care.
Dr. Ma was born in China and grew up in Canada before moving to the United States. He graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University with a double major in chemistry and biology, and went on to earn both his MD and PhD from Columbia University through the prestigious Medical Scientist Training Program. During his postdoctoral work, he developed a strong interest in retinal diseases while studying the genetics of inherited eye conditions such as Stargardt disease and macular telangiectasia.
He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary, where he also served as a clinical instructor. Throughout his training, Dr. Ma was actively involved in outreach efforts, providing resources for non-English speaking patients and volunteering in clinics that serve Chinese and Native American communities.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Ma continues to publish and present research on diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and innovative methods of drug delivery. His dedication to advancing retina care ensures his patients benefit from both his surgical expertise and his involvement in the latest scientific developments.
Above all, Dr. Ma is passionate about empowering his patients through education and collaboration. “I strive to educate my patients about their retinal conditions and listen to what really bothers them,” he shares. “Understanding their priorities allows us to build an effective treatment plan addressing what matters most to them.”
Outside of medicine, Dr. Ma enjoys traveling, pottery, board games, and attending the opera. He is fluent in both English and Mandarin.
Please join us in giving Dr. Ma a warm welcome to Pacific Northwest Retina. We are excited for the expertise, compassion, and energy he brings to our practice and to the patients we serve.
