Meet Dr. Frank Ma
Ophthalmology

Dr. Frank Ma is a board-certified ophthalmologist and retina specialist dedicated to the medical and surgical care of conditions affecting the retina and vitreous. He was born in China and grew up in Toronto and Calgary, Canada, before moving to the United States. He graduated summa cum laude from Cornell University with a double major in chemistry and biology. He went on to earn his MD and PhD at Columbia University as part of the highly competitive Medical Scientist Training Program. His interest in ophthalmology and specifically retina during his postdoctoral work in the genetics of Stargardt disease and macular telangiectasia.
Dr. Ma completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary, where he also served as a clinical instructor. In addition to caring for patients, he continues to publish research and present on diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, and innovative methods of drug delivery in leading journals and has presented his research at national and international meetings. He led initiatives during his training on providing educational resources and instructions for non-English speakers and volunteered in outreach clinics targeted to Chinese and Native Americans.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Ma enjoys traveling, pottery, board games, and attending the opera.
