What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye is a condition in which a person doesn’t have enough quality tears to lubricate and nourish the eye. Tears are necessary for maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye. As a result of dry eye, your eyes cannot eliminate dust and other irritants and can cause stinging, burning, pain, redness. Although it’s uncomfortable, dry eye syndrome almost never causes permanent vision loss.

What Are the Causes of Dry Eye?

A majority of patients with dry eye have chronic inflammation in the glands that line the eyelid and in the conjunctiva. Just like inflammation in a knee, this chronic inflammation can permanently damage the tear gland tissue to the point that treatments becomes ineffective.

How is Dry Eye Treated?

There are treatments for dry eyes may make you more comfortable and ease your symptoms. These treatments can include both lifestyle changes and medicines such as eye drops. You’ll likely need to take these measures indefinitely to control the symptoms of dry eyes.
